Fax From Sarajevo by Joe Kubert

This compelling graphic novel tells the true story of a European comics agent and his family through a series of faxes sent to his friends detailing the brutality of the Serbian forces in Sarajevo. Ervin Rustemagic, the main character, and his family literally become trapped in the city when their suburban home and possessions are destroyed. They take refuge in an abandoned building with a group of other people trying to survive the war zone. Throughout their harrrowing experiences are examples of humankind at its best- those with little to give are willing to help others. The final section of the book includes a condensed version of each chapter with photos of the actual people and places depicted in the narrative.

I knew little about the Serbian conflict, so this was eye-opening for me. It kept my interest the whole way though. I thought it was a very well done graphic novel dealing with an important subject.
