An unusual find: short stories about relationships from a man’s point of view. In “One Last Garage Sale” and “In Flagstaff” two fiancés decide before their weddings that they are marrying the wrong spouse. The almost surreal “Beaching It” describes an affair between a young summer visitor and a beautiful 40-something bored spouse who is known by all the guys at the local crab shack/bar. This collection won the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference Bakeless Prize; a reader can easily see why: compelling narratives, dialogue that flies out restaurant doors, beautiful and gritty descriptions of interesting locales and motel innards. A collection you can nibble or eat whole.
